Hello, Noir - and, thanks for the welcome!
It's great to be talking to a true Irishman; my grandfather came over here on the boat, from County Kilkenny. They say that my family name is as common there as Smith and Jones are around here. I'd sure like to come and visit someday!

Hi, theironlady!
The last band I was in would catch an extended engagement in Columbus, about one week out of every eight. The folks up there are SERIOUS about their Buckeyes. As it turns out, one of our members had been an honored guest of the State of Ohio some ten years ago - spending a few years in one of their five-star penal institutions near Columbus. He'd heard enough "Buckeyes this" and "Buckeyes that" to last him ten lifetimes; he hated them with a passion! So, he'd always take delight in wearing his Michigan hat to all our gigs - unless, of course, it was game day - in which case he'd wear his Michigan jersey and Michigan jacket, as well.
We had some interesting shows up there, I don't mind telling you!

Should be O'clooney, by rights - I guess we got done out of our rightful "O' " somewhere along the line.

Re: Hello from the Buckeye State!
yeah, some Irish families who are still in Ireland alsogot rid of the O
And FYI anyone who doesn't know the O' in an Irish surname stands for 'son of' ie O'connor=son of Connor.

The "son of" designation could change the character of my family name altogether, if you choose to believe my detractors!

Ha ha - there was some pretty serious size in that band. Our stage didn't look like the kind of place you'd want to rush. He got plenty of nasty comments, though. Truthfully, I thought it was a pretty stupid idea - from a PR standpoint. But, what do I know?

I ran into a guy in an Air Force hanger snack bar one time, and he had the same last name as me, except he had an "O" in front of it. His comment was that many people dropped the O' when they came to this country to sound more "American." My ancestors have been here for hundreds of years. My father has done an extensive genealogy on our name, but didn't find any evidence our name ever had an O' in front of it.
